A Domain Registrar is a company or organization that facilitates the registration of domain names on the internet. They are the intermediary between Registrants and the Registries that they are registering the domain name and TLD with.

They are ICANN accredited organizations responsible for managing the Registrants’ registration of their domain names with various Registries. The Registries in turn are the overseers of top-level domains, or TLDs, ccTLDs, and gTLDs amongst others.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities of Domain Registrars

  1. Domain Registration: Registrars allow individuals and businesses to register and purchase domain names.
  2. Contact Information: During the registration process, users are required to provide contact information, names, addresses, email, and phone numbers.
  3. DNS Management: Registrars provide tools for users to manage Domain Name System (DNS) settings. Users can configure DNS records to specify how the domain is linked to web servers, email servers, and other services.
  4. Renewal Services: Domain registrations are typically valid for a specific period, often one year. Registrars offer renewal services, allowing domain owners to extend the registration for additional periods.
  5. Transfer Services: Registrars facilitate domain transfers, allowing users to move their domain registration from one registrar to another.
  6. WHOIS Privacy Protection: Many registrars offer WHOIS privacy protection services to help protect personal contact information of the domain owner from being publicly displayed in the WHOIS database.
  7. Additional Services: Some registrars offer additional services, such as website hosting, email hosting, website builders, and security features.

When selecting a registrar, users often consider factors such as pricing, user interface, customer support, additional services offered, and the availability of specific domain extensions.
