Understanding Browser Recognition

SSLs or Secure Sockets Layers are cryptographic protocols which secure communication over the internet by encrypting data transmitted between a server and a browser.

These certificates require both the web server and browser to work in conjunction with one-another to establish an encrypted channel for the exchange of information. Trust between a browser and server depends on the browser’s ability to trust the SSL provider.

Connecting Servers and Browsers

When Servers and Browsers connect the following process takes place:

  1. The browser requests identification.
  2. The server sends a copy of the SSL Certificate.
  3. After this, the browser checks whether it trusts the SSL
  4. When the browser establishes trust thanks to the SSL Certificate, it then replies to the server.
  5. The server returns a digitally signed acknowledgement to start an SSL encrypted session.
  6. Encrypted data can now be shared between the browser and the server.

How SSL Certificate Trusts Works

When an SSL certificate is issued by a Certificate Authority (CA) trusted by the browser, the browser verifies the issuer’s source before displaying the secured website’s content. However, if the certificate is self-signed or issued by an unrecognized Certificate Authority, the browser may show a security alert or warning.

Root Certificate Ubiquity

Most browser developers release their software with pre-installed root certificates from known CAs. An SSL Certificate’s root ubiquity or level of browser recognition (also referred to as “browser compatibility”) reflects the number of browsers that trust the CA. Users of outdated browsers might lack certain root certificates. Therefore, SSL Certificate providers cannot guarantee 100% browser compatibility.
