CuteFTP is considered a user-friendly option for beginners to configure their sites thanks to its graphical interface. You can create, delete, rename, and manage files in CuteFTP on a remote server.
This article assumes that you are logged in to the Hosted.com Dashboard, and have installed CuteFTP and configured it on your computer.
Manage Files in CuteFTP
Creating a Folder
1. Connect to the remote server.
2. Use the panel on the left side to create the new folder.
3. Right-click on an empty area within the folder.
4. Choose “New Folder” to create an empty folder.
5. A new folder window will open.
6. Type your desired name for the file and press “OK” to confirm.
The new folder will now be displayed on the remote server.
Renaming a File
1. Select the newly created folder to rename.
2. Right click on the folder and select Rename from the drop down.
3. Type the new name and press Enter to confirm.
4. Alternatively, you can double click on the folder and type the new name in the block directly. Press “Enter” to save the change.
Downloading Files
1. On the remote server panel, browse to the location of the folder or file you want to download.
2. Click on the file you want to download for the drag & drop method.
3. Just like uploading, you can ‘drag’ the selected folder or file and ‘drop’ it into the desired place on the local server (or computer).
4. You can also right-click on the selected file and choose “Download” from the menu.
Deleting a File
- Click on the folder or file you want to remove.
- Press the “Delete” icon.
- or right-click on the selected file and choose “Delete” from the menu.
Deleting a file typically sends it to the Recycle Bin first. You can permanently remove it from there or restore it if needed.
CuteFTP transfers files between your local machine and the remote server, but it does not inherently delete or upload files from your local machine. The files remain on your computer after being transferred to the server.
Note: Deleting files from the server should be done with caution as it permanently removes the file from the server.
Additional Information:
CuteFTP Functionality
CuteFTP has a dual-panel display. One panel shows your local files and folders, and the other shows the files and folders on the remote server.
Like most File Transfer Protocols (FTPs) CuteFTP needs login information to connect to the server. This includes the server’s IP address or domain name, username, and password. These credentials are usually provided by your web hosting provider. Once you have the credentials, you can connect to the remote server.
It can synch local and remote folders, ensuring they have the same files and folders. You can schedule file transfers or create queues to automate the transfer process. This is especially helpful for repetitive tasks or transferring large batches of files.
For added convenience, CuteFTP allows you to minimize the program, and have it run in the background. This lets you use your computer for other things while files are being uploaded or downloaded.
