Understanding how to recognize a valid SSL Certificate (Secure Socket Layer) on a website is vital for ensuring your online safety.

Check the URL for a Valid SSL Certificate

When a website is secured with an SSL Certificate, it will appear in the browser URL with the prefix https://, denoting Secure HTTP, i.e. which signifies that data exchanged between your browser and the website’s server will be encrypted. A secure website will typically display a small padlock icon in front of the browser’s address bar. Some SSL certificates may also show the issuing authority’s trust mark.

In contrast, an unsecured website’s address starts with http://, where HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. (Refer the image to the left.)

The first image indicates an Unsecure URL Address (https://)  and the second reflects a Secure URL Address (indicating the https://)

Inspect the Certificate Details:

When clicking on the padlock icon or trust mark, you can access the SSL certificate’s details. SSL Certified sites often feature a trust mark or padlock. Clicking on this seal or padlock reveals details of the certificate and company information, verified, and authenticated by the Certificate Authority (CA). This information will also indicate the encryption type and the SSL certificate validity.

Extended Validation (EV) Certificates:

If the website holds an Extended Validation (EV) Certificate, the URL address bar will turn green. This highly visible indicator provides users with immediate assurance of the most secure level and is more common in the finance sector, banking and large e-commerce organizations. If a site has an Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certification, the address bar in high-security browsers will turn green. (Refer the image to the right.)
