What is
PCI DSS Level 1?

A set of 12 requirements, as outlined by the PCI Security Standards Council, must be met by any merchant, in order to become PCI compliant. Major credit card providers have adopted these standards to ensure that a cardholder’s information remains encrypted and secure during every online transaction. This includes Visa and Mastercard.

PCI compliance standards require merchants to:

  • Maintain a secure network
  • Protect customer data
  • Test and patch vulnerabilities
  • Restrict access
  • Regularly test networks
  • Document all policies and procedures

A payment token is used by the secure payment processor to complete approved transactions linked to your account. It cannot be used as your actual card number and is designed to help protect your payment details.

Tokenization is a secure way to process card payments because it helps keep your full card number protected. Instead of storing or reusing your actual card details, the payment processor uses a secure token for approved transactions.

Encryption protects card details by scrambling the information during processing. Tokenization goes a step further by replacing credit card details with a secure token. This reduces the need to handle the actual credit card number during future approved payments.
