There are several situations where you may need to cancel an SSL certificate, such as purchasing the incorrect type, making configuration errors, or no longer needing the certificate for a domain.
Hosted.com® provides tools to manage SSL certificates directly within your hosting environment. However, before cancelling, it is important to understand the potential impact on your website’s security and whether a refund may apply.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
When Should You Cancel an SSL Certificate?
You should consider cancelling your SSL certificate if:
- You selected the incorrect certificate type during purchase.
- You need to replace it with a different configuration.
- Your hosting plan now includes a free SSL alternative.
- The associated domain or service is no longer active.
How to Remove an SSL Certificate in cPanel
To delete an SSL certificate from your server, follow these steps carefully:
1. Login to your Hosted.com® client area using your account credentials.
2. Navigate to your hosting service by opening the Manage Services dropdown menu.
3. Click Manage next to your domain.
4. On the following page, choose Login, next to Control Panel, to access cPanel.
5. Once inside cPanel, scroll to the Security section and click SSL/TLS.
6. Select the option to manage or view installed SSL certificates.
7. Locate the certificate you wish to remove from the list displayed.
8. Click the Delete option next to the certificate and confirm the action when prompted.
After completing these steps, the SSL certificate will be removed from your server.
Will You Receive a Refund?
Refund eligibility depends on both the time since issuance and the policies of the authority (CA).
You may qualify for a refund if:
- The certificate is cancelled within the permitted refund window.
- The certificate has not yet been installed or actively used.
Refunds are generally not available for free SSL certificates included with hosting plans.
Additional Information
- Impact on Website Security: Cancelling an SSL certificate will immediately remove encryption from your website. This means browsers will display security warnings, which can negatively affect user trust and search engine rankings.
- Reissuing vs Cancelling: In many cases, issues with an SSL certificate can be resolved through reissuing rather than cancelling. Reissuing allows you to correct errors without losing coverage or restarting the process entirely.
- Certificate Authority Policies: Each Certificate Authority (CA) has its own rules regarding cancellations and refunds. These policies typically include strict timeframes and usage conditions that must be met.
- Auto-Renewal & Billing: It is important to note that cancelling a certificate does not always automatically stop future billing. Review your account settings to ensure auto-renewal is disabled if the certificate is no longer required.
- Planning: If your website is still active, always install a replacement SSL certificate before removing the existing one to avoid service disruptions or security warnings
