When sending an email, not all delivery failures mean something is permanently wrong. Some errors are designed to indicate short-term interruptions that can be resolved on their own. SMTP Error 421 is one of these temporary responses that is commonly seen during periods of high server activity or brief service interruptions.

The SMTP Error 421 – Temporary Server Unavailable message indicates that the mail server is currently unable to accept or process email connections. This does not mean the email address is invalid, or that your message has been rejected permanently. Instead, it signals that the server is temporarily unavailable and may accept the message once conditions stabilize. In many cases, retrying the delivery after a short delay will result in successful transmission.

How to Resolve SMTP Error 421

  1. Wait a few minutes before attempting to resend the email, as the issue may be resolved automatically.
  2. Reduce the number of emails being sent simultaneously, especially if you send through an application or script.
  3. Check whether your sending IP address is being rate-limited due to high outbound volume.
  4. Verify that your email client or application is using the correct Hosted.com® SMTP settings.
  5. Contact Hosted.com® support if the error continues for an extended period or occurs repeatedly.

Additional Information

  • SMTP Error 421 is classified as a temporary failure, which means the sending mail server is expected to retry delivery automatically later.
  • This error is often associated with temporary server load management or short-term service interruptions on the receiving server.
  • Mail servers use temporary failures to protect system stability without permanently rejecting legitimate email.
  • Repeated rapid retries may result in further throttling or delays, so retry intervals should be respected.
  • Persistent 421 errors may indicate broader connectivity or routing issues that require investigation.
  • Modern mail servers increasingly use SMTP Error 421 as a temporary control mechanism to manage abnormal sending behavior and protect system stability.
  • Error 421 is often triggered when a sending IP transmits messages at a velocity that does not resemble typical human or business email patterns, through means such as AI spam.
