Spoofing is a deceptive technique used in cyberattacks where an attacker impersonates a trusted source to gain access to sensitive information or trick recipients into taking harmful actions.

In email spoofing, the sender’s address is forged to make the message appear legitimate, often mimicking well-known brands or contacts.

This type of attack is commonly used in phishing campaigns and can pose significant risks to individuals and organizations. Understanding spoofing and how it works is essential for maintaining email security and protecting your Hosted.com® email environment.

How Spoofing Works

  • Attackers manipulate email headers to alter the sender’s address.
  • The email appears to come from a trusted or familiar source.
  • Recipients may be misled into taking harmful actions.

How to Protect Against Spoofing

1. Enable email authentication methods such as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.

2. Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments from unknown senders.

3. Verify the sender’s email address carefully before responding.

4. Use email spam filters and security tools to detect suspicious messages.
