What Happens When Changing Languages on WordPress?

Changing the language setting on your WordPress site allows you to present it in a language other than the one chosen when you initially set up your site. For example, you could change it from English to Spanish.

When you have saved the changes, WordPress will install the desired language and the following will happen:

It will automatically change the language of your WordPress dashboard. You can manually change this back to the default setting if this becomes an issue for you.

It will simultaneously set the front-end language of your site to the new one. It will also attempt to automatically translate your site’s basic content, like dates, comments, widgets, etc.

However, existing posts and content will not be translated; it will only translate the default text strings from your theme and plugins. Changing your dashboard and/or the front-end language settings will not affect your site’s Reading Settings.

It is important to remember that certain themes and plugins may not have your required language available. Check that those you installed support it before trying to change your settings. If they do not, you may need to install a translation plugin like Weglot Translate or download an additional language pack.

Why Change Your Site’s Language?

Changing the language of your WordPress dashboard can simplify site management, especially if you are more comfortable using a language other than English.

If you are using your website to target a specific group or region, changing your site’s language can make it more accessible and easier for your audience to navigate. This change can make your site more appealing to your target audience and could lead to more traffic and conversions.

You can also provide multiple languages on your site. This option allows users to choose their preferred dialect without limiting them to a single language.
